Spanish Immersion

Spanish Immersion at Bend International School retains the goal of creating a bilingual student community where Spanish is used by students, staff and during classroom instruction throughout the day.  In Kindergarten and 1st-grade students are exposed to foundational vocabulary through teacher instruction, activities and games that immerse students in a bilingual environment. As students progress through primary school students are exposed to more Spanish vocabulary and phrases during our school day.  Staff in our primary school speak both English and Spanish and switching between the two during the day is common at Bend International School. Teachers lead classroom instruction using the Total Physical Response method of language learning which puts an emphasis on combining physical movements with language instruction.

Spanish Immersion

Friday whole school elective classes are all taught in Spanish across a wide variety of fun courses for students.  Physical Education classes are all taught in Spanish grades K-8. When students eat lunch in our cafeteria they order and served their food using Spanish.  As part of our Sister School project in Tlaquepaque, Mexico each student is matched up with a counterpart and they use both Spanish and English to communicate with each other throughout the school year.  We emphasize students using and listening to Spanish for real-world communicative needs that will help them become bilingual adults.

Join Us

There is no minimum Spanish requirement for students to apply and join Bend International School.  We will happily meet your students at whatever Spanish skills they already have when they first matriculate.  As time passes though all Bend International School students develop a healthy confidence in the ability to understand and use Spanish throughout the day. Our immersion model works over time and students gain fluency each and every day as they gain confidence in their ability to navigate the bilingual environment that they find every day at Bend International School.
